Sport Fishing

Fishing is not a cultural phenomenon in Bhutan, despite having huge resource of fresh water rivers and more than 40 species of fresh water fish, most importantly the fresh water tour. In fact, Bhutanese buy fish and release it in the river during the festival of blessed rainy day. Killing of fish is regarded inauspicious and against Buddhism. However the experience of fishing in the Bhutan icy cool rivers, surround by the unique people and panoramic landscape is an ultimate experience. One may engage in sports fishing; for which, special permit is required from department of forestry. Fishing spots range from large rivers to crystal clear spring-fed streams. Altitudes range from a low of 1,200 meters to 3,000 meters. Common species are snow trout and the brown trout. Best time for fishing is in March to May and September to November. Equipment is not easily available in Bhutan and prior arrangement is a required.
